thinking my clutch my need a change soon.
now i am considering doing this myself, but just how difficult is it to do on a driveway, with only jack and jack stands?
think i will invest in a engine bar to hold the engine up post gearbox mount disconnect.
how heavy is the gearbox and is it a pain in the ar$e manhandling the thing off and on again?

Thats all I have, Depends what do you call difficult, .
Getting it in the air is easy enough. But what about spanners, impact guns, sockets ratchets,, . With the correct tools it is easy, without then not.
The money you save doing it yourself, will allow you to buy the tools needed.
Then you will have the tools for other jobs.....
Give yourself 2 days, and it wont be hard, set yourself a time frame and it will put unneeded pressure on you....
If going to reuse the oil, drain and store, if not , (once in the air,) make this one of your first jobs, move it out of the way. Dont leave it anywhere that there is a chance of knocking it over, or spilling it.
That is one of the hardest jobs, taking oil out ,,, and putting it back in
Good luck with it

how experienced are you in the mechanical field ? and tools ? suitable area to work on the car, you ain't going to do the clutch at the side of the road or on a slope.

Be honest with yourself - realistically can I do this? do I have the tools ? do I have a place to do it? what's the weather going to be like for the next week, and if it takes more than a few days how am I going to get to work for the next week ?

Have you got a Haynes and read what's involved ?

Ring around get some idea of prices (Mr Clutch - AutoFix etc) and it will come with a guarantee too.

cheapest iv got for a clutch job is 400quid. which isnt bad, but considering i think i may also have the beginnings of a DMF flywheel going, that 400quid could be used for a new DMF or a solid flywheel conversion.
and iv got even better than the haynes manual, the renault workshop manual!

When my mate over the road changed his clutch on his Vauxhall Insignia,
i came home on the day he was putting the bell housing back in, i found him trying to bench press it back into position, we managed to do it but boy was it heavy, never underestimate the weight of something that looks light.

Never get under a car that is solely supported by a trolley jack, stick axle stands under it first, then you have the jack to maneuver the bell housing back in to position.

Forgot to mention that. The car had ramps under the body & axle stands on the chassis members. Need the jack to support engine. We supported the gearbox by rope from above & swung it in.

Weighs about 85lb, not much more.... I can lift and maneuver a large tommy bar..
but can also put an engine in a car without lifting the engine physically ..
It is down to what YOU can do, not us,
We are trying to explain, nothing do with different sizes of body or strength, and I kid you not ,,, If I break into a sweat, its because irs hot, or threatened with work .. 11=+stone ringing wet, but can take out and put in most gearbox's
Should you feel "in your mind " you can do the job,,, Then go for it, and learn as you go.
If you dont try You will not know, not me or anyone else...Can tell you that,...
Believe in yourself, and be amazed of what you can and cannot do:wink2:

85 lbs = 40kg ish.
should be able to benchpress that!
in all honesty though for the sake of 40quid i think its worth an engine support beam. the fact you can have one hook on the engine lifting eye and the other hook on a chain and then onto the gearbox should make it a million times better.
my fear with the jack and wood under the sump to hold it is that all the putting and poking around underneath you might accidently hit the jack and cause the sump to slip off!

how is asking about cost to repair a clutch in a thread about fixing clutches off topic? someone needs to go back to school.

I have Asked you Nicely, twice, to refrain from Hi-Jacking a DIY repair thread, With how much to replace, on a totally different model.
If you wish to receive a BAN for arguing with & disrespecting a Moderator's, formerly friendly advice Then please go ahead.
