Question Auto handbrake not release fron neutral to drive?

If I put my auto Espace IV 2.2dci in park and apply the handbrake manually then when I put it into Drive it auto releases, great.

If I do the same but only put the car in Neutral it does not release automatically.

This suggests that at long wait traffic lights I should put the auto box in Park to get the desired auto handbrake release. Does this sound right and is it a good/bad thing to do this? If I have to do that, is there any issue with just putting the car in Park and ignoring the handbrake completely (i.e leave it off) when at traffic lights.

I am reluctant to sit there with my foot on the brake pedal because I know how irritating this can be for those behind.
