Laguna II - ABS not working but no warning lights ?

Hi,
the ABS on my Laguna isn't working, but I have no warning lights.

I know the ABS isn't working as I've tested it on a gavel surface & the wheels lock up and the car skids.

The ABS dashboard warning lights light up and go out as they should when the ignition is first put on.
No one has tampered with the wiring of the lights behind the dash.

I disconnected the Left Hand side front (Near Side Front) ABS sensor, this made the ABS warning lights come on, I reconnected the sensor and drove the car for about 50 yards and the ABS lights on the dash went out.
This makes me think that the problem isn't with any of the sensors and maybe it's the ABS pump that is at fault.

Any ideas where I go next with this problem?

Cheers.

Not sure, but I think the ABS requires a minimum speed before it will operate (so it can detect the wheel rotation appropriately).
So when you did your gravel test, did you get up to a significant speed? (Yes, I realise this is a worrying thing to test; large car parks are the best location I have found, but more and more of these have "excessive" street lighting to increase the danger.

Re: Laguna II - ABS not working but no warning lights ?

Hi,
I was up to about 25 - 30mph when I done the gravel test, I also done the same test in another car at the same speed and the ABS kicked in on that.

Cheers.

Re: Laguna II - ABS not working but no warning lights ?

Hi,
Thinking about this problem....part of the ABS system must be working or I would have a warning light just like I did when I disconnected the N/S wheel sensor, so I guess that the system is monitoring the wheel sensors ok.

I can only assume that when I brake and the wheels lock up that the signal is being sent to the pump for it to operate but it isn't operating and the system doesn't realise this, if it did realise I guess a warning light would come on.

Could the motor be seized or something, I assume the motor is the black can on the pump?

Could the valves in the pump be seized?

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Re: Laguna II - ABS not working but no warning lights ?

A gravel surface is not a good way of testing the ABS system. Similar to ice when all the wheels stop turning the ABS controller may assume the vehicle has come to rest.

I appreciate another car performed differently but for ABS to work correctly the wheels must have sufficient traction.

Try and find a wide open tarmac or concrete area.
