How far did the bolt go in before it wouldn't turn any more? (i.e. about as much as the section on the damaged bolt occurs)?
Reason I ask, is that the damaged thread on the bolt is very close to the initial point of entry into the hub, (which makes sense, as that's when cross-threading is most likely to occur), so it may be possible to insert a pinkie to feel for any imperfections in the thread/foreign bodies in the hub.
Even an old toothbrush can be used to dislodge & remove any such fragments.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
