Abs braking system...
I have been to my local garage to report a 'crunching' sound why i brake (intermittent).
They jacked up my car and found the 'cog' which is on the end of the driveshaft was broken...this is what activates the abs, and as it was rusty, broken and generally just fell off when touched, was activating the abs and making the noise..
fair enough, although it seems a fairly flimsy system, but what do I know ?
that's the good news...fault diagnosed.
To replace this circular cog thing, I need to buy a new drive shaft..in fact 2 if I want to do the other side, which is also a bit rusty and worn...my car is a 1999 after all...but 2 driveshafts ? £75 each..plus £100 Labour ? No way I can afford all that.
Fortunately, I can drive along ok without the abs, apart from the warning light being on all the time. And even more fortunately, I've just had it MOT, so no worries about the new regs about dashboard warning lights for 12 months...
So, what do i do ? I have a year to think about it...do i sell..do i disconnect the bulb...do i pay £250 which is about what the car is worth..or does someone know a cheaper, easier method I can fix this problem.
Ironically one of the drive shaft is worn anyway, but the law of Sod says it's the one on the other side of course, to the one where the 'cog' has broken....
What to do ? anybody..please...?
