Brakes - Warning Lights & Pedal Travel

I had the 'low brale fluid' warning light and 'Service' display come on last night on my Espace.

I topped the fluid up this morning and the warning light has gone off. Quick check and I can't see any leaks so I'm assuming (hoping) it's due to the pads having worn low.

Anyay, I'm a little concerned about the pedal travel. It feels a bit soft and if I press harder, the pedal sinks further. I don't think that is quite normal as there should be firm resistance after a 'point' but that point is not being reached.

What could be wrong? I'm think of bleeding the system / flushing it before I do anything else, but any other ideas that I could explore at the same time?

Thanks leroy.. will do that next weekeend, until then, I will keep an eye on the fluid to see if there is any loss.

I know the cylinders are a weak point on the Laguna's so am kind of expecting them to leak, but no visible signs yet.

Will give it a proper check next weekend (hopefully I can find a big enough socket for the rear drums!)

Hi. As Leroy has already said, check the pistons. More the rear cylinders. You can usually tell when you take the drums off. If its all wet then Replace both rear cylinders, shoes and give the drums a dam good clean with either brake cleaner (usually in an aerosol) or something similar. You dont want any oily residue on the braking surface.
As for your fronts, I f you feel vibration in the brake pedal then more than likely your discs are warped. Replace both the discs and pads and it will cure it. Also, make sure the slides move freely when you have the calipers off and where the backing plate of the pads slide along the caliper carrier, give them a good clean with a wire brush.
Hope this helps :)
