07 Megane, rattling brake pads

Been taking a look at a Megane today to sort a rattling noise on the front. It turned out to be the brake pad rattling within the caliper. I noticed that where the brake pads slide into the caliper mount there are no retaining anti rattle shims that I would expect to see there. I've been to motor factors to see if there are shims that come with new pads but it seems there are not. Are there actually supposed to be any fitted? If it helps it is an ATE caliper fitted to an 07 Megane 1.6 petrol. I have included a pic. (ignore the fact that the retaining spring is removed. That is not the cause of the problem.)

Re: 07 Megane, rattling brake pads

Don't think there are shims, just the anti rattle spring you have removed.
Slghtly undersized pad backing plates along with the paint wearing off the ends.
A bit of wear and over zealous cleaning of the carrier.
excessive wear of the sliding pins or holes.
Any or all the above can contribute to the problem.
If you are looking for a quick fix, I would take the pads out and lubricate the ends a little and maybe look for some double sided sticky anti squeal shims for the back of the pads. If you can still get them that is.
Once the pads stick to the caliper and piston they should stop rattling about as much.
