Renault scenic ABs rings? - Told i can only get whole shaft?

hi there,

My Renault Scenic Megane 2001 was making a knocking noise when i brake (only doing it about 10% of the time though and seemed to be when i braked harder)

So i took it to my local garage (where i had discs and pads replaced in jan at 200) who have said that both ABS rings are corroded and need replacing, but that my car would need the whole shaft as they cant buy the rings seperately, and quoted me almost 300!

Ive been looking on the internet, and found rings for my year car are coming up at 10-15.

Am i looking at the wrong thigs here or am i being conned by the garage?

Any advice would be really appreciated as my knowledge on cars is limited.

Many thanks!

Yes the ABS rings do come off and you can buy replacement ABS rings but make sure they are the right size. It's not unusual for the rings to corrode but unless you're getting the ABS warning light coming on I wouldn't worry about it

The gargage probably just doesn't want the hassle of changing the ABS rings as it's quicker for them to replace the whole shafts?

It would be unusual for the ABS rings to cause a knocking sound when braking and if they are badly corroded or cracked I would suspect you would get an ABS warning light albeit occasionally.
Does the ABS warning light ever appear whilst driving??

Have the problem double checked in case it is a drive coupling problem - no point in doing the job twice if you get my drift.

If going for the replacement ABS option you will need to measure the diameter and count the number of teeth on the existing rings to ensure the new units match.

Have a read through the link below.
