Renalt clio front brake noise

Hi i just looked at the front pads on my wifes 04 clio as i thought thy were worn, but were ok,the problem is when on hard braking there is a noise from the near side wheel, like a grinding sound,if i apply the brakes gently no noise it can be felt in the pedel, could there be a fault with something on the ABS on this side?
Any help would be aprisiated.
