I wouldn't disagree with you bringing back the older car's, at least the home DIY fan had a fair or even good chance of curing most of the common problem fairly easily.

the fact that your brake peddle is travelling and feels spongy is not a good sign, so bleeding the brakes may aleviate this problem and it may not.

Were there wear ridges on the outside of the discs?.If so,this is what is causing the soft peddle and until the pads have 'bed-in' or the discs are replaced then there will be a gap between the main pad face and the disc face.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
