Hope someone maybe able to help me? I've had my W reg (2000) megane 1.6 hatch now since May last year. Yes its quite an old motor, but it fits the purpose I needed at the time of a cheap run around to get me to work etc... To be honest it's cost me a small fortune since having it, but guess its the luck of the draw!
In November I had the near side rear wheel bearing replaced (along with the exhaust and front brake pads). The car was fine for a while, until I started getting a slight grumbling noise like what a wheel bearing gives when they're starting to go about a month ago. Its not been too bad of a noise and so my local garage said to leave it until it becomes a lot louder so they can hear which wheel bearing it is that needs replacing again?
So I have left it, and tbh its not really gotten any worse. Until yesterday when I got on the motorway! I was on the approach ramp before getting on the M5, and the noise was pretty much the same as it had been, but then the ABS and SERV lights came on the dashboard. I had a few dabs on the brakes whilst no traffic was behind so I was confident that my brakes were working. When I got off the motorway onto a quiet road, I slammed on the brakes to see if the ABS was working, but it didn't. But still the brakes were working fine otherwise.
I guess gradually the noise of what I believe to be a bearing has got slightly louder as my journey went on, perhaps due to heat being generated through lack of grease in the bearing housing? One of my mates suggested steering the car left to right to see whether the noise changed under load to distinguish if its a front wheel bearing, and if so which one? I did this, but could hear no difference in the noise. To confirm the noise comes on at around 30MPH.
I have jacked the car up on each of the 4 corners this morning and span the wheels to hear if there was any noise, but I couldn't hear anything tbh (this is what the mechanics did each time at my locak garage to establish what wheel bearing had gone). I also tried pushing and pulling each wheel at the top and bottom of the wheel and again could feel no play/movement in any of the wheels...
Can anyone suggest anything else I could try, or does anyone have any suggestions what the noise and ABS problem could be? Could it be related or just 2 separate issues?
If anyone is interested in buying the car, i'm open to suggestions as I think this has to be the last nail in the coffin for me and my megane! lol.
