Renault trafic brakes failed!

Hi all I was wondering if you could give me some advice please

I own a Renault trafic 1.9 dci and whilst driving home from work the other day the power steering stopped working and the brakes failed whilst going down a hill in bendy lanes, nice!

I managed to stop the van using the handbrake and a barrier at the side of the road

The reason I thought the brakes had failed was because wheni tried braking the pedal would not budge, it was like a brick

I stopped the van and switched the engine off for a few ins then tried again, the brakes where still the same but the power steering worked ok.

Took a good ten mins before the brakes would work again and I haven't used the van since as I'm afraid it will happen again

Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be?

Also previously in the day the van stopped dead on a roundabout on the way to work but started ok when I switched engine on/off, and previously to this when I brake the steering wheel shakes so I don't know if this is connected

Thanks for the replies

Re: Renault trafic brakes failed!

it sounds like it could be a stuck pistion or pistons not allowing the pads to come in contact with the disc....i would check this also the sliders on the calipers themselves just a thought.....check these out any way to rule out that aspect

Re: Renault trafic brakes failed!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you have a number of different issues....

Firstly,if you get a vibration through the steering when braking then the front discs are warped.

Secondly, the brake pedal going hard sounds like a servo fault.Have the vacuum pump, pipework and servo all checked.

The power steering could be a pump/rack/fluid level fault.

I think it's best you get the van thoroughly checked over, preferably get it trailered/recovered on a truck to a garage rather than chance driving it.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Re: Renault trafic brakes failed!

I'd say definitely follow Lagdti's advice. If your van is empty and you have a garage nearby they can probably tow it in for minimal cost. As its one of those 'unexpected' kind of faults its not worth the risk in driving it until the brake fault has been diagnosed.
