Angry 08 grand scenic electronic handbrake replacement price

Hi all
This is my first post so please go easy on me
I have a 08 grand scenic that was just recently put in for a service and MOT with my local garage, i received a call telling me the electronic hand brake had seized, rather than replace the part i was informed the whole lot has to be replaced at a price of 823 excluding fitting and activation by a renault garage
I phoned the renault garage to have the price confirmed and also told that it is only the later grand scenic 2`s that have it, i have to admit i feel like i have just been mugged and really dont have over a grand to spend on a car worth probably only 3 1/2 grand - 4 grand at most.

Is there anyway to get around having to pay out so much cash and how can renault justify extorting that kind of money for a part for a car that was bought as a good budget priced family runaround ......

I now have no car (MOT expires today) 3 kids to take to school 2 1/2 miles from home and 2 large dogs to ferry to the local coast for their daily walk

Re: 08 grand scenic electronic handbrake replacement price

Snap ! I have just been through the very same experience in the last 3 days and got stonewalled by the Renault so-called customer support team who refuse to accept that there is a problem with the design, even there has been no dashboard warning to sy that it was not operating correctly.
They maintain that they have had so few complaints about the electronic handbrake (and even had the nerve to describe it as "a popular feature with customers") that they refused to contribute towards the cost of replacing the unit.
This was the second MOT in a row where my car failed because of the handbrake and on both occasions I was told by the Renault dealer that the electronic unit had to be replaced and not just the faulty caliper. The first time around I refused to accept their verdict and on the advice of a former car mechanic insisted that they replace the caliper only and then lubricate the cables and lo-and-behold it worked.
Had no choice this time but to pay the money because I didn't have the time to argue about it. I am deeply unhappy about this and would encourage everyone who is suffering similar issues with this unnecessary and utterly pointless piece of electronic junk (what is wrong with a simple mechanical handbrake cable that has been used successfully for the last 100 years?) to complain to Renault directly so that they will be forced to recognise that there really is a problem with this system do something about it.
