Laguna II P2 Handbrake

Hi just bought a 57 plate 2.0 dci Dynamique hatch a week ago. The car was supposed to have gone through its MOT with no advisories but I found a badly warped tyre the same day. As tyres are a bit of a grey area I made the decision to fit four new tyres as the rest were cheap and nasty and quite worn. While I was waiting at the tyre bay the fitter called me over to show me that the handbrake on the n/s wasn't on at all, the o/s was holding fine. You can turn the wheel with one finger. I'm an ex mechanic but can't do much of my own work due to illness, however I was wondering if there is anything obvious that would cause one side not to work other than the obvious seized cable/caliper? It's the electric handbrake type and there are no dash warnings etc. I have been in touch with VOSA as the MOT station is not answering their phone, I just wanted my facts before things go further.

Re: Laguna II P2 Handbrake

Hello and welcome to the forum, sorry you haven't had a reply for three days but I guess your post was over looked.

The usual suspects for the handbrake are indeed either a cable or faulty caliper, this should of course have been picked up on the MOT so something is going wrong at the station you took the car to (obviously they missed the tyre as well, did they not even advise you of the tyres condition?) and contacting VOSA would be my first port of call. They might not be able to do anything about the tyre situation as you have already fixed the fault (did you keep the old tyres by any chance?),but as long as the handbrake hasn't been fixed yet they will be able to investigate the test station and take appropriate action.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Re: Laguna II P2 Handbrake

Thanks for the reply. I have contacted VOSA and they are arranging an MOT to check the vehicle, apparently it had failed the month before I bought it on the same issue so it sounds like a dodgy test to me.

I phoned the trader who I bought the car from two weeks ago and they are not interested, even though I stated the car in not classed as roadworthy therefore not fit for purpose. I have now also contacted trading standards and I'm awaiting their reply.

As an ex mechanic/tester who can't work due to disability I'm not surprised by this as I've seen far too many shonky traders and test stations in my time unfortunately.
