Renault Master rear brake compensator rod

I have just fitted a new second hand brake compensator rod to my Master van as the original ones ball joint had disintegrated and fallen off. Is there an easy way of setting it up as it is currently pushing the lever on the valve to the extent of it's travel with no weight in the van. I know what the "official" Renault method is with 2 pressure gauges and extensive mathematics to work out tyre deformation etc but there must be an easier way surely
