Unusual brake wear on Espace

I am starting to wonder why I even bought this blinkin Espace, finding lots of probs, anyway latest problem I have discovered is that there is unusual wear on the brake disks, anyone ever noticed anything like this on their Renault? The pics in order are rear drivers side, rear passengers side (worst and weirdest wear) front passenger and front drivers. I have never seen a wear pattern like this before where only the centre of the disk has been used. All pads were replaced 6 months ago according to paperwork that came with car. How many pistons do rear calipers have on these cars? Maybe sticking calipers? Cheers

Re: Unusual brake wear on Espace

These rear ones look very much alike my old ones on my Megane II (got them changed yesterday). Basically the car was standing too long somewhere and rust got too deep into the disc structure. It also depends somewhat on the material used to make discs. Which is why I've heard that not so many people like Renault OEMs.

My mechanic said that this is what you get with discs - better braking power, but they need to be driven often to clear out the rust. He is very right, as my previous Astra had been standing on the airport for 3 weeks and discs were completely useless afterwards (from new).

With Megane (which was standing at the seller's parking lot too long), I was actually surprised that the front ones did clear out and now they are perfect. For rear discs to clear out, you'll need freeway as they never get hot enough in town driving.

Btw, it has nothing to do with Renault or Espace - I've had it on Opel and I also saw it happen on numerous other brands. It's the matter of driving style and disc quality (hence, buy ATE or Ferodo or similar good brand).

Re: Unusual brake wear on Espace

Agree with that, what you've pictured is common on a lot of cars, I guess the car has been sitting idle a while, the discs have rusted, then instead of the pads polishing the disc up again, the rust has abraded the pads unevenly, so they're not contacting the discs properly now?
New discs and pads are the only answer, they don't look too bad yet and would probably (?) pass an MOT like that, although they will only get worse.
It may be regarded as bad driving, but I do think that braking hard, now and again, does help to keep the discs shiny.
