Ya it's better to take the driveshaft out mate and a rubber mallet probably won't do it - better with a lump hammer and drift. Once you take the disc brake off you still need to take the hub off the shaft (stick thingy) to remove the ring, by which point you may as well just pull it out and work on it on a bench or whatever. Before starting the procedure count the number of teeth on the current ring and buy an equivalent - there are at least two different rings with different numbers of teeth on depending on your model.
