Thumbs down Renault Laguna 2 - Alloy Wheels Stuck To Hubs

Decided to rotate the wheels front to rear - rear to front , the 19inch alloys on the front were stuck on , by corrosion I think as it took quite a bit of effort to remove them off the hub with a rubber mallet , all nicely done now filed and copper greased up my point is had I got a puncture away from home on either of the two fronts I would have been stuck (bit like the wheels) , I'm in the AA but thats not the point bit happier now . bloody Laguna's.

Not just Lagunas, anything that got a steel alloy interface is subject to an electrolytic reaction, who ever thought alloy calipers and a steel mount was a good idea, as in Citroen C5 rear brakes, wants stuffing,

The older I get the better I was, must be mad not got enough money to be excentric

Yep,as Prag says,it's not just a Renault problem unfortunately, but the longer service intervals have definately made the situation worse recently. In some cases wheel aren't being removed for 20,000 miles/2 years, and if the centres haven't been lubricated they will stick as the alloy corrodes on to the steel hub spigot.

The worst ones I've come across so far are some of the newer Saabs, they can be a nightmare to remove, especially as you have to be very carefull not to damage the wheel rim.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Speaking as someone who regularly removes alloys for refurbishment - this is a common problem, which is most serious on the fronts, as the front brakes run hotter, ahich also causes a bit of metallic expansion (compared with the rears).

If you don't have a mallet or such like, remove a car mat, place it near the 'stuck' wheel, sit on the mat (when its safe to do so), then strike the sidewall with your feet in a 'quarter to three' position, rotating your strikes either clockwise or anti clockwise around the circumference of the wheel.

It should go without saying that the wheel needs to be in the air, and bolts/studs almost removed (don't remove entirely, as the wheel will suddenly move, and fall off if unsecured).

Hope that helps.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
