Delaminated brake shoe.
Happens, maybe not often but can happen.
And cause seizing, damage to drum, overstroking of slave piston (which then leaks)
And sounds like the lad managed a full house.
They mean that there should always be some braking but are only a once or twice use system.
When there is a massive leak, the system will stop the car, once. After that, fluid loss and air will allow far more pedal travel and total failure.
Ideally there should be two totally separate systems.
But there aren't.
It is a rare failure but if you already haven't, swap the other side shoes.
