I took the old ones out and cleaned everything up, it all seems to work fine with nothing corroded in place so no sticking pistons etc. Perhaps I am just not strong enough to use the draper cube thingy to push and rotate them back in.
see post #9

the draper cube thing sounds like just the foot part that turns piston ? the tool is normally 2 or 3 parts consisting of the foot (cube thingy!) a plate that pushes against caliper and a threaded bar to turn foot

Renault Scenic 2 - Rear Brake Pad Replacement read this for pics of tool

and just to add confusion to this some say right hand thread and some say left hand thread in diferent threads - i think google may be your friend here

just looked on YouTube

RENAULT MEGANE 2 & 3 ***10032; How to rear brake replacement. Rotor and Pads change

shows rotating piston Clockwise to go in

also as abs pump doesn't like fluid being forced back - crack open the bleeder so the fluid has somewhere to.

Re: Can't get megane new rear pads in

I found on my Scenic that there was an issue getting enough pressure to start the pistons winding back but once they "caught" wound back with ease.
Couple of mil of hydraulic extension plus the handbrake mechanism extension.
Think, not certain, that the hydraulic extension is the PITA.
Opening bleed nipple to give an easy out for the fluid is probably best option to overcome.
