If a brake disc is badly worn or corroded it can cause a large differential in temperature and heat disapation across the brake pad. For instance if one side of the pad is hot and the other cooler the differential can cause heat stress which in turn can cause friction surface cracks or bonding failure. You have to remember the metal backing of the pad is meant to conduct heat away from the pad surface not just the disc.
