Back brake woes ( Share Yours )

Who on here never does the back breaks on their car but takes it to the garage?

The reason I ask is quite simple.

Give me front breaks and I could change them day after day however every time I have worked on the back breaks on any of my cars it has gone T**s up.

On two occasions I ended up having to get a mobile mechanic out to completely rebuild them

I just cannot for the life of me do back breaks I Know Pathetic but true.

So I'm putting it out there.Don't be shy share your back break woes stories.

What's a garage? Too tight to pay.
Do use them to have bearings pressed in / out, but that's all. Changed a lot of discs recently. No probs.

Biggest issue I seem to have with shoes is getting that little washer onto the pin while compressing the springs.
Like circlip firing, it is a depressing sport hunting around the drive for the little bu66ers.

Then the trial and error bit setting the ratchet on the auto adjust, always a bit of a pain.

IIRC, handbrake pads on a Jag IRS rear axle were awkward, more from their inboard position then anything else.

Winding back calipers can be a PITA but never invested in a proper wind back tool so my own fault

Re: Back brake woes ( Share Yours )

Never had any problem, except heads on adjusters on the Cambridge wore out and had to use mole grips to adjust them. Not bad after 50 years. Have just got new ones to fit next time.

On modern cars finding somewhere to put the jack and stands is getting increasingly difficult. Also having the right size sockets (lots of sets do not have sizes 16 and 18 ) to undo the calipers.

Garages - there where you go once a year to collect the MOT certificate.

When doing your back brakes,, (because you dont do them all the time,) take photos, upload to your laptop, and then you have something to go off..

Are awkward little beggar's, most of the time, if the hub will come off, I will take it off.
On the disc brake side, lift the rubber dust boot, spray a bit of wd40, inside.
It will then screw in easily.....
Dancingdad likes this.

I think, aesthetically, car design is so interesting - the dashboards, the steering wheels, and the beauty of the mechanics. I don't know how any of it works, I don't want to know,
