Hi. I hope someone can help me as the cars due an mot this week! I've bought a Renault Grand Scenic II 2.0 petrol automatic that has always had the check handbrake warning message and the little p with a triangle on the dash. I've tried the comments on here about turning the ignition on without the engine running and putting the handbrake on and off and that hasn't helped. I've also replaced the rear pads as they were a bit low as some people have reported this helped but still no luck. The handbrake will come on and off fine with the manual lever just to the right of the steering wheel but it won't release automatically when I pull off in the car. However if I stop the engine and don't put the handbrake on and go to get out the car the car will apply the handbrake automatically. I don't have access to a clip so I've downloaded an app from Google play called Oh No! for Renault which will connect to the epb module and reports the error code C1166/5166 clutch switch fault short to ground. Now obviously with the car being an automatic there isn't a clutch so is correct that it sees a short to ground for a clutch switch or is this fault code what's causing the check handbrake message to be displayed? Any help would be very gratefully received as I've been to the mot station and they've told me that it won't pass an mot with this error message. Many thanks. Rob

The only way forward with this is by using some good diagnostic kit.All these cheapo happy shopper scanners are about as good as a handbrake on a canoe .Could possibly be a fault with bad wiring. Not unknown to find rotten wiring to the connector under the passenger seat.Remove the slide out plastic drawer and check the large multi pin connection.Inspect carefully, but don't touch the plug or wiring.

I think it's your Neutral Switch.
Well it was when I had this on a manual Scenic.
Sounds silly, please check if your reversing light works. On mine the Neutral & Rev switch was a combination.
£24 from EuroCarParts, cured the issue.
BTW OhNo gave me the same codes. DONT Pay them, as just replacing the switch, If that, will remove the code, without a diagnostic reset.

ZV1, as for the C2 Connector. worth a check, but as for not touching, rubbish, if affected, especially by water, they need strapping out fully.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've read about problems with the reverse switch but the reverse lights do come on and the parking sensors beep so I think that means the switch is OK. I did have a quick look at the fuses under the passenger seat and they were ok. I couldn't really get access to the plug/wiring as it's got a cd multichanger under there not the plastic storage tray that can just be pulled out but I'll remover the multichanger and have a proper look

Try starting it in gear. Should say select neutral, if it doesn't, there's your fault. Some cars have individual switches, yours may be one.

I've been having a look at everything this morning. I've tried to start the car in reverse and drive and the car won't start. It says on the dash select park or neutral to start. I've had the passenger seat out and got to the r32? connector. Everything there is fine. Ive disconnected the plug and there's no water or green/corrosion and I've given all the wires a tug to make sure none are loose in the connector block. I've sprayed everything with some switch/contact cleaner just in case this helped. There are some fuses and a relay near this connector so I've checked all the fuses and wiring - all ok. I'm thinking the only other fault must be in the handbrake control unit itself? The unit that's underneath the car near the spare wheel. The warning triangle with the little p appeared on the dash as soon as I reconnected the battery - before I even turned the ignition on. Anybody got any ideas please?

I bought a Grand Scenic II very cheaply due to the hand brake fault message being on - but the auto hand break feature was working correctly - it turned out Halfords had fitted a battery 2 weeks previously without leaving side light on / window down causing a electric 'spike' in one of computers... tried manual reset / reset via dash switch and disconnecting, leaving 30 mins and re connecting battery 2 or 3 times - NONE of this worked!!

I then used my icarsoft 907 ODBII tool to reset message and resync computers, it took a couple of goes and this cured my problem, and remove a lot of false stored faults. This may not be same as yours but might just help

If your local to Norwich Norfolk can always give your a quick scan and reset and yes icarsoft 907 works with EPB Fully on Mk.2 Scenic's and partly with mk.3's (wont wind back motors BUT clears fault if done via wires method) - Having owned 2 scenic's its paid for itself - rather than paying Renault!

the icarsoft RT (think 907 version 2) will wind back mk.3 calipers - but is +£50 more than the icarsoft 907

there are others makes of course.... and I also have a bluetooth clone em327 unit and use torque (paid) android app... no idea if works with EPB as only use as a data logger to phone.

pretty sure if you get a new EPB module it's renault to code to your VIN or 'cough cough' a renault clip clone.
