Grand Scenic MK3 Parking Break will not release.

Hi All, I have a 2011 Grand Scenic (MK3) The Electric Parking Break will not release when you attempt to drive away. I have read the fault code with a Renault Clip and I get this current fault (DTC516C64 Manual Command). I can release and apply the Parking break with a Renault Clip so I assume the Callipers are OK. When I try to release or apply the Parking Break with the Dash switch it just goes from a solid red led to a flashing one and the break does not release. I have changed the switch but no difference. Any thoughts any one? I see lots of help with the MK2 on the forum but not so much for the MK3. I know the clutch position sensor is involved in releasing the parking break as it the slope sensor. From looking at the readings from the Renault Clip I can see that the clutch position sensor is working as it does vary depending on how far down the clutch is. I cant recall what the slope value is reading, I will check it later. Any help or guidance would really be appreciated. I had the parking break warning on the dash for a few weeks but was able to clear it as it was only a stored fault and not a current one but now it is a hard fault and the clip will not reset it.

Correct me if I am wrong but the Mk3 has powered calipers for the EPB rather then the single EPB unit and cables ?
If so, from what we see on here, lots more reliable.

On the Mk2, there are two switches on clutch that affect the EPB.
One is the position sensor, on Mk2, the central switch with long operating lever.
Second is the top switch...can't remember exactly what it does but do know it effects operation and will bring up dashboard error message.
Dunno if same on Mk 3.
Slope sensor controls how much brake is applied and when to release against slope, clutch position and amount of throttle.

Re: Grand Scenic MK3 Parking Brake will not release.

Check the micro switches in the release handle. Believe there are 3. History of them failing / dropping out of location.
As per DD. There are 3 switches to check:- Clutch Up, Clutch down & Brake too (possibly Passenger side) Check brake lights, to prove that one.
And a clutch pedal Position sensor, which is a variable resistor.
This too is based on my experience of a Mk2. Sorry.

That was the actual code clip gave you...
Dont connect to the car, switch laptop on..
Boot/open clip, close the box that reads no sensor detected, top line file, then diagnostics, click this, second line down, report, click on this, click consult, bottom right hand corner..
See what is not working, also post your after sales type code on here.
Just the 4 alphanumerical code... let me get that code up, and find out what is not working.
Was there any other faults reported in the UCH....

Great a clip expert, I really appreciate the help. I will follow your steps and get back tomorrow.

Boot/open clip, close the box that reads no sensor detected, top line file, then diagnostics, click this, second line down, report, click on this, click consult, bottom right hand corner..
But at which point will I connect the ODB connector?
FYI my Clip is ver 151. Also should I enter the VIN manually or let the clip fill it in or does it matter?

Click on the question mark, allow clip to find vin, .
Check this vin with your car, if they match, you are good to go.
If they do not match, use the one off the car...
Without interface connected, top line File , diagnostic , tool, click tool, then click configuration, then user, make sure there is a name in here, if you have not done this,,,
Your post above is correct,,, word of warning, as dont want you getting a slapped wrist DONT post any screen shots:grin2:

Sorry , you wont need to connect interface, you can do all this in the comfort of your chair, or if a naughty boy, in the corner, just make sure you click to close the no sensor connected combo box

OK "ours 2012" I did those steps and I get 2 faults:

Parking Break
Index
DTC516C64

Title
Manual Command

Characterisation
1.DEF

State
Present

and

UCH
Index
DTC957915

Title
Rear Fog Light Circuit

Characterisation
CO.1

State
Present

The Fog light was caused by moisture collecting in the bulb holder months ago and does not give a message on the dash, I do not think the 2 are related and I am not worried about that for now.

But here is a little more background. I got the parking Break fault on the dash months ago but as it was only a stored fault I cleared it with the clip and all was OK. When it came back last week it was a hard fault and the break would not release when driving away I read the codes and got DTC510111 (Rear Left hand Caliper Actuator) and DTC516C64 (Manual Command). I found the Parking Break ECU and noticed plastic case was a little deformed as if the unit have over heated at some point. So I changed it for another second hand unit and then re tested and the Caliper fault cleared and left the manual command one. I assumed the caliper fault was erroneous due to a bad ECU but perhaps I am mistaken and I should change the actuator on the left caliper and replace the origional Park Break ECU. Any thoughts on all that?

JZ1G is the code you ask for I believe. Also Clutch position sensor goes from 12% to 79% (fully down to fully up) , driver door switch works and so does break pedal switch as per the clip readings. The slope sensor reads 33 on level ground. Thanks so much for all this help.

You have not had any switch off/out have you.
Asking now so please dont take offence, but they have to be reset, with spacers.
Before we try and find an issue thats down to adjustment at the front

If it has never happened before you could hope it is an intermittent fault. Maybe shut everything down for ten minutes, lock up and go for a coffee, then try again.

Not very scientific advice but worth a try.
