handbrake reset? how??

hi, the handbrake recently got stuck on in an 07 scenic. we tried all the usuals with key in and pressing buttons as advised on here but had to call a tow in the end, it was just on and that was that! the tow truck driver had to pull the override in the boot and said it has to be reset now. can i do this at home would anyone know?? any tips?? friends and the driver said it could be rear brake caliper, electric unit or switch causing issue, are these big/expensive jobs? thanks!!

Re: handbrake reset? how??

What you've been told by the recovery driver is about as much as we can tell you at the moment.

Does there seem to be power to the rear unit?
Can you hear it trying?
Any warning lights/messages on dash
Red light on manual handle ?

Resetting a working unit after boot release pulled is simple.
I'm concerned you haven't a working unit.

thanks for your reply!

yes theres power there, no noise when it was jammed but when released you could hear it, had seemed to be working fine. no warning lights at all, even now when its disconnected, but the noise comes on telling us to lock parking brake, and sign on dash when parking it. red light on the handle is on. its as if the whole handbrake doesnt exist to the car otherwise. a couple of months back the handbrake wouldnt come on, then the next day worked fine.. and the red light was not on the handle when that happened and no warning lights... went in a cycle like that for a couple of weeks and been fine since, until now. i could feel a slight pull on the car the last couple of days, as if the breaks werent fully released, not sure if that might have something to do with it...

Re: handbrake reset? how??

Try the reset then but does sound as though there may be an intermittent fault.

Door open, key card in.
In neutral.
Don't touch any pedals.
Press and hold start button until dashboard lights up fully...about ten seconds.

Push in and hold centre button on handbrake handle
Pull outer handle (basically you are manually releasing handbrake)
Hold for 5-10 seconds.
Operate handbrake normally.
Press start button to switch off and key card out.

That's it.

When boot release is pulled, it disconnects the cables inside the parking brake unit.
When you operate manually and hold, the unit drives back as far as it can and cables relink, then unit can operate again.

On the fault, check under passenger seat, you will need to remove the drawer.
There are cables and fuses under there.
Hopefully no water but check, that is a common problem.
