Exclamation Renault Clio Brakes

Hi new to this.

My problem started the other day when there was a screeching noise (similar to that of a fan belt) coming from what I thought was my back brakes. A friend took of the shoes but these seem to be fine. The noise has stopped but now my handbrake goes all the way up and I have to almost put my foot through the floor to brake. Don't know if my friend has done something when putting the shoes back on. Can anyone help with this problem please?

Seems to be a quiet day for Clios! not an owner myself but here's my two cents Possibly the shoes have been re-fitted without taking up the slack between the shoes and the brake drum. Normally this wouldn't matter too much as the brake is (likely) self-adjusting. My guess is that the original noise might have been part of the self-adjusting mechanism coming adrift and it is no longer operating. Just an off chance, but you could try operating the handbrake a few times which would normally take up the slack if all was well. Another possibility is that the handbrake cable was not re-connected or has come adrift/broken at the brake back-plate.
