Some pads do come with a backing on them, others don't.It can be a bit hit and miss to be honest, theres no hard and fast rules unfortunately.

This is the brake paste I used to use.....

....but now I don't tend to bother.

Brake squeal cases have gone up massively since asbestos has been banned from the pad material, the replacement blend of materials seems to cause squeal much more readily than when asbestos was used. The condition of the discs is important too, especially when fitting new pads to old discs.Higher spec pads are even more problematic.....

In most cases,if a set of pads squeals, then putting paste of the back of them won't cure the squeal completely. It might cause it to disappear for a while, but it will usually come back.Backings for the pads are usually much more successfull, but these will also wear through with time usually.Cleaning the dust from the brakes periodically can help prevent the problem (you'll notice that brakes don't squeal went you drive in the rain),but again if the brakes squeal from new, then it could very difficult to completely erradicate the noise.

Different pad manufacturers use different blends of material and even different shaped friction material with chaffered edges to them.Bedding in pads properly can also help prevent squeal from occuring,a lot of people don't realise that you shouldn't be harsh with the brakes for at least 200 miles after they have been replaced.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
