an experiment to try would be to apply the foot brake before applying the hand brake this should then assure that the rear cylinders are fully out. if the shoes stick after releasing the handbrake then the hydraulics wont be pushed back and you should have the foot brake there when you need it. I suggest you have a brake check done in case it is more than this sooner rather than later.

Sticking rear shoes would not effect the normal braking of your Espace, the problem is in the braking system, if there is any air in the hydraulic system it could be that, as when you press your pedal a couple of times your brakes work.

Try bleeding the whole system. If you cannot do this or it does not cure it get your Espace to the garage.
