Renault clio brakes squeal like a banshee!

hi all, my wifes clio's brakes squeal, is there anything i can do to stop it making this terrible noise, on the odd occassion it doesnt do it, but 99% of the time it does, it's a T reg.

any ideas or will simply new pads be the answer, it was serviced a few months ago so i dont expect they are worn out !.

It is possible that the anti rattle springs have broken, fallen out or not been replaced. Not too sure on the Clio.
It is possible to remove the pads and put a small amount of Copperslip or similar on the BACK of the pads and refit them. This normally does the trick. Hope this helps. Regards Oily

thanks oilyrag

cheers buddy, thanks for that, it just so happens, when i was walking the dog at 8am this morning i mentioned my squealing problem to my doggie mate, and he said exactly the same as you Oily !, so thanks again, it seems between you, you are both spot on.

the only thing that remains is for the missus to stop driving it around in this bloody hot weather and give me a chance to get the wheels off and have a look at it. LOL.

Brake squeal is caused by many different things, but it has become more of a problem recently after asbetsos has been banned from use as a pad material, and longer service intervals have neccessitated harder pad materials.

Anti squeal pads(which stick onto the back of the brake pads and are available from all good motor factors) cure 90% of all brake squeal, but sometimes it is the pads themselves that cause the problem.Greasing the backs of the pads is not a long term fix,as the grease melts and gets washed off,so the problem returns.Copper slip grease is not really a suitable product to use anymore, but there are other products specifically designed for using on pads. Also, chamfering the leading and trailing edges off the pads seems to help,in some cases.

We have had problems at work with the front brakes on a Peugeot 406 coupe(Brembo calipers),and had to try 4 different sets of pads(all of different materials) until the sqealing noise stopped......

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

thanks a lot "lagdti" for another opinion, i havent done anything about it yet, but i do have a motor factor place right near to where i work. too bloody hot today to do anything at all.

I see Alonsos spell at the front has come to an end.
