The heat may cook the seals but that does not matter if the purpose of the exercise is to renew the bearing. Fit grease nipples on the new bearing when you are at it. I've done that on my Smart. Have grease nipples on the rear and oil lubed bearings on the front. See below links for details:
Converting wheel bearing for grease nipples.
Converting wheel bearing for oil lubrication.
Obviously the above applies to a Smart car but may work equally well on a Renault.

Ah, bit of a commute that! Thanks for the thought anyway.

I had a day off today (to study!!) and took it to the local tyre fitter who used the biggest air hammer I've ever seen to take it off. Didn't want any money, but I gave him the price of a few pints anyhow, at least then I can go back and ask again if I need to. He seemed genuinely shocked!

The rest of the job was fairly straight, forward, just remove the old hub and fit the new (well, new to me anyway- donated by a mate). Apart from a bit of trouble with the big bolts holding the strut to the hub, there were no problems. Best if all, the abs is cured, no lights, no wobbly speedo needle, just a car that works.

I love it when a plan comes together....
