If the engine overheats the coolant sytem is likely to become air-locked thus the engine coolant sensor may not be getting a correct reading thus playing havoc with the idle speed.

Mate i think you got a definite good point there as to the main problem here! The original problem of the previous owner not checking the oil causing the engine to come to a halt, despite the head gasket getting sorted (apart from not re-seating the tappets!), that in itself leading i presume therefore from what you're saying, has caused the additional problem of an air lock and therefore the idle problem which it apparently didnt have before the oil issue/engine seizure lol.

What a headache eh.

So can you tell me mate, what basic steps do i need to go through to deal with rectifying this problem bearing in mind am working on my own with limited time and money for replacement parts and limited experience?
Would you say its worth the effort or not or maybe just better getting another engine?
