OK, finally worked this out myself!
Rear door access hole IS in correct place - you need to reach a bit further for the mechanism than with the front door. Although the hole is well positioned, the mechanism is 4-5 inches into the door cavity.
My biggest problem was that there was a wiring loom just in front of the release lever. Once I could see what was what (used a torch in the dark - easier than in daylight) it was easy to move the wiring loom to one side and access the lever. Just operating 'by feel' was never going to work here.
You have to work in the dark, use a small touch, held close to your eye, and don't get too close to the access hole - it's easier if you sit back from the hole and move your torch/head slowly around until you can see what you need.
I have a similar problem with mine and wanted to remove my handles, could you detail a little more how to remove the front handle as a starting point?
