Hello Supersweep,welcome to the forum.
It certaintly sounds as thought the impactor for the central locking in the boot has packed up.If you can remove the trim on the inside of the boot you will see the mechanism and should be able to work out what is happening.The impactor will have a couple of wires running to it and should work the lock,if nothing happens when you work the central locking then either the impactor is faulty or you have a broken wire to it where it runs into the boot near the hinges.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
