Installing a Sub

a couple weeks back, i upgraded the speakers in my mk1 clio from 1 set of 4" blaupunkt speakers to a set of 6" door speakers and some 6x9s in the back shelf. I have a sub and amp, which was going to be installed at the same time. But the bit i struggled with was finding a path for the Red battery wire to go from the battery to the boot. Do i need to drill through the firewall thing?

i found a rubber gromet which insulates the wires going through the car. I found this behind the windscreen water wash. I took the top of the dash off and tried to feed the wire through but couldnt quite put it through and found i couldnt get my hand down to the other side.

Now i've been thinking that it would be soooo much easier if i drilled a whole through the metal near the footwell..

what do you guys think?
