Not sure how the DCi engine is laid out but on the 1.4 petrol it's definately easier to remove from above.
Leaning over the driver wing, just reach down and bend round the alternator and get a grip on the filter. I didn't think I'd get it off but keeping the pressure applied it gradually came unscrewed.
The sump plug is round with an 8mm square hole. The plug washer was about £1.50 from the renault dealer. It's just a normal copper or steel washer with a plastic/rubber insert.
