Just before anybody says that the marks will line up again eventually,yes they will but you'd have to turn the engine over many,many times for this to happen.I've been through this with a Ford timing chain on the old double over head cam 8 valve engine.They time the cams up with gold links in the chain which you have to line up with marks to enure everythings in the right place before you remove it.I stated with a socket and ratchet on the bottom pulley bolt,and after about 10 minutes of continually turning the engine over,I took the spark plugs out and put an air ratchet on the socket.After another 15 minutes I managed to get the marks lined up!.Great fun............

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
