Hi there, yes you can replace the gear Knob on Laguna I as long as the replacement is the lift up reverse type, however,
due to the way the originals are fitted it is usually a case of actually carefully cutting them free, you will probably find that the replacement should be held in place with grub screws. The problem with the display sounds like a blown bulb, If I remember correctly there is one at each side and one central, it wiil be necessary to remove the display to change the bulb, the bulbs are usually available from Maplins.
