Yes, I'm beginning to think I may have to replace it anyway, just to try! I've had it out, cleaned it.... and the contacts.....and the contacts of everything else in the engine management system, including the tdc sensor. Also had the MAP sensor out and cleaned that. Can't find any problems at all.

Also had loads of Injector cleaner through it.

Disconnecting the IAT to see what happens is a good idea, I'll try that next time it plays up.

Not sure if its worse in different ambient temperatures - probably not, but the erratic idle is definitely worse after a long run when the engine is really hot.

Incidentally - am I right in thinking that this engine does not use a mass airflow sensor?? First one I have come across that doesn't!
