One benefit of the throttle position sensor is that it is not affected by inlet air temperature. During development the air flow is bench tested using air flow measuring equipmnent at various throttle positions. This information is then incorporated into the software in the ECU . In many respects it is more robust but not not as accurate during cold starts.
Also remember the ECU also monitors engine coolant temperature
