Grand Scenic questions

Hi, first up sorry for the long post, it's my first one!
I've just bought a 2005 Grand Scenic Expression 1.9dCi with 31K miles on it and initially I'm quite pleased.
I bought the car to tow a caravan which I've also just bought.
The ride initially felt really quite bouncy, which surprised me somewhat as none of the reviews that I'd read had mentioned this. The car came with a factory fitted towbar so I'm guessing that it's done some towing, but when I hooked it up to my caravan it seemed very low at the back. With the car level with nothing attached the distance between the top of the wheel arch to the ground is around 685mm on the nearside and 680 offside. Does anyone know if this seems low compared to their own car?
Also the towing electrics were factory fitted and I've changed the 12N socket for a dual socket and I've left the 12S unconnected as yet but I've got a grey and a purple wire left, does anyone knoow what these are for. Reversing light maybe?
Thanks in advance for any help.
