Problem solved (again).
Tried cleaning contacts with wet & dry which sort of worked. It was intermittent by this point. Noticing that one side was looser than the other (which was the side that was playing up), the last resort was applying a small amount of copper grease to the newly replaced bulb holder pins. Since then, both rear lights have worked perfectly.
When it did go crazy, the rear fog lamp symbol on the dash always came on when braking, that's how it was easy to spot the random fault.
