Hi Bob the voltage regulator on the back of the speedo panel is known to give probs on the Vauxhalls. If this part is duff the needle tends to vary greatly depending on the voltage output of the alternator and therefore vary on engine speed. When driving at a constant speed the needle sits nice and steady - stop at the next set of lights and its moved considerably.
Depending on the model the sender unit may be incorporated into the tank fuel pump.
But in all honesty in my experiece Vauxhall fuel guages are notoriously unreliable and when they show empty they truly are empty. Little or no reserve even if it has a warning light
