Hi all

In an attempt so solve my various suspension problems, knocking and bad tracking, ive replaced front wishbones, track rod ends and drop-links.

Whilst this has solved my knocking issues I still have a problem with tracking. Issue is it keeps going out. I have had it tracked up three times, twice at the same place as they offered a free check up.

A month later my steering wheel shifts so it is no longer straight when I'm driving straight. The ride just feels not as stiff. I cannot be more specific than that as it doesn't do anything specific like pull or wobble or anything. It just feels 'wrong' when steering and driving on the motorway. However it stays like this and doesn't continually get worse.

Now my question is what to look at next? I'm practically half way there but i don't want to do a full suspension rebuild just to rectify this, unless i can determine its really necessary. Im thinking of looking at the track rods themselves but how do i determine they are at fault? Iv'e read to check for play but what is the best way? When i pull on them there doesn't seem to be any but would that exert enough force to check for excessive movement? Then theres the strut mounts. I haven't replaced them and in the service history theres no mention of them being done. Could these cause my tracking issue? Then the steering rack itself, i have no idea how to approach that for possible wear/damage.

Hope anyone can offer advice im really getting annoyed with it after all that work and thinking its fixed yet more issues arise :( Wish my fiat was on the road, this car was meant to be the reliable one whilst i work on the fiat and its had more bloody problems.

Now that's an interesting point. around 10 month ago i had some work done at a garage and they threaded one of the subframe bolts. The one which bolts the arm to the chassis coming of the front of the subframe. I since fixed it by re tapping the thread and applying a second nut to the top, posted a thread on here about it actually. It held fine and allowed me to torque it up properly. I haven't looked at it since and wouldn't have thought to, to be honest. I understand how that could cause issues if it has come loose, but how could engine mounts affect my tracking? As yes they are very 'tired'.

With regards to the steering rack as far as I'm aware there has been no accidents. No signs of any shunts on either side.

And in my naivety I just asked for tracking, I guess it would be just two wheel not four.

Have you fallen out with anyone? I had the same problem with my previous car. I spent a fortune on garage bills and investigations that never found anything wrong, front tyres would burn out within weeks. It cost me a fortune, eventually I thought it must be a problem with camber from some shunt or past accident even though the garage told me the chassis was ok. The story gets interesting when I scrapped the car and bought my current Renault, because the problem continued. How could my new car also have the same problem? I used CCTV for months suspecting something funny was going on, and I was right, I caught a person reaching under the front wheel arch with two adjustable spanners. Some person was deliberately throwing the tracking off, other times I would see a person kicking the front tyres. This didn’t happen outside my house, it was in the multi storey car park that I frequent every week while I go shopping.
