Never take chances with the ECU - if you think you have probs now - the cost of total replacement would probably outweigh the value of your car. If you think 33 for a replacement sensor is expensive try pricing an ECU and reprgramming of all the necessary bits and bobs
Fitting a piece of wire across the terminals may result in a short causing damge to the circuitry of the main board in the ECU .
If stuck for money at present it may be worth trying a scrappie
