Question Laguna II no trip counter

I just bought a 2nd hand Laguna estate on a 54 plate. It all seems pretty great actually and handles well. Cruises in 6th excellently. Very, very pleased generally.

I have one thing that is irritating and hope someone can assist - and another general query about the computer.

1. The mileage shows up ok, but the trip counter doesn't show anything at all. I am assuming the computer has something to do with it. Also the service "spanner" is flashing. I read somewhere that i need to disconnect the battery for a short period of time? is that right?

2. I would rather disable the computer completely as i am wary of the tyre pressure warning problems and don't want to spend a lot of my time keeping a computer happy. If I have the computer disabled can anyone tell me what adverse effects that would have? Also is the disabling something I need to get a renault main dealer to do?

many thanks in advance
