Starting Problem

We have owned our 2001 Clio 1.4 auto for over 2 years and in that time it has proved to be a reliable car except on the odd occasion it will not start, the ignition lights come on, and hours can pass before it will start as if nothing was wrong and then be ok for 4 or more months. The last time this happened was this sunday gone where we called the breakdown service out, he wiggled the key in and out and up and down and the car started after about 5 mins. He said it could be a piece of plastic at the back of the ignition barrel moving. We have had the car into Renault and other garages in the past has anyone had problems with the ignition barrel?
