The sensor should not be removed from the windscreen!!
There should be an airtight fit and no air bubbles between the screen and the sensor. That is why whenever a reputable windscreen replacement company changes the windscreen they also change the rain sensor.
That is why it works when you press on the back of it - you are improving the contact.
This could be your problem.
The auto wipers on our Megane (06 model) are generally very good and I find that sensitivity either needs to be on max or min - in between doesn't really make much difference.
