Xenons levelling

Hi all,

I'm just about to order a new ballast for my o/s xenon headlight but I've noticed that since it failed the lights no longer do their self adjustment check thing when you turn them on. Does the levelling check only work if both lights are working, or is this likely to be a seperate problem?

Also, when checking the bulbs I discovered the previous owner had left the cover off the back of the headlight presumably meaning the ballast has got damp. Is it worth removing it to dry it out or is it likely to be a write-off? I don't know if they can be opened and worked on or if they're sealed.
