I don't think the new lambda probe will require you to leave the battery off for a couple of hours. We're talking an "old" setup here. It surely isn't that sophisticated!? I would assume the ECU will "adjust" itself acordingly to the new sensor and its presumably correct readings. AFAIK it will affect the cars idle - it monitors the exhaust output of the car under all operating conditions.

Best to get the car tested with a hot engine. I always give a car a proper thrashing before the MOT and arrive just in time for it
