Sounds like it may have been wired wrongly to start with.If it had no memory then there was no permanent feed to it.

Have you still got the original connections from the car plugged into the radio or did you have to modify them to fit the new radio?.The plugs should all be standard,but some cars need the permanent feed and the switchable feed swapped when an aftermarket radio is fitted(some VW's are like this).

Ideally you need a test light to check which wire is which.This would confirm whether you have the radio wired correctly.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
